SHA Now Covers IVF Treatment at Fertility Point
For many couples, the journey to parenthood can be emotional, stressful, and sometimes financially challenging. There is now good news for families in Kenya seeking fertility treatment.
Social Health Authority (SHA) has now included IVF treatment under Assisted Fertility Treatment for eligible members through the Provider Portal. This means qualifying patients can now access IVF support at Fertility Point.

What does this mean for patients?
If you are a member under eligible POMSF schemes, part of your IVF treatment costs can now be covered by SHA, depending on your cover plan and eligibility requirements.
This support is meant to help couples facing infertility challenges access treatment with less financial pressure.

Who is eligible for the IVF benefit?
The IVF benefit is available only for:
- Principal members under POMSF schemes (TSC, NPS, Civil Servant)
- Their declared spouses

IVF cover limits
The amount covered Mwalumu: KES 600,000
The cover amount applies to the full IVF treatment cycle, including any approved second attempt.

What IVF services are covered?
The IVF benefit shall cover one complete treatment cycle, including:
1. Diagnostic & Pre-Treatment Services
- Baseline pelvic scan
- Hormonal blood tests and fertility assessment
- Specialist consultations and treatment planning
2. Ovarian Stimulation & Monitoring
- Monitoring scans
- Hormonal tracking
- Ongoing clinical consultations
3. Oocyte Retrieval
- Egg retrieval procedure under sedation
- Theatre and related procedural costs
4. Laboratory Procedures
- Sperm and egg preparation
- Fertilization (including ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) where clinically indicated)
- Embryo culture and monitoring (up to blastocyst stage where applicable)
5. Embryo Transfer
- Fresh embryo transfer procedure
6. Medications
- Ovarian stimulation drugs
- Trigger medications
- Luteal phase support (including progesterone)
7. Confirmation of Pregnancy
- Initial pregnancy test (B-hCG)
- First obstetric ultrasound scan

Exclusions: The following shall not be covered;
- Embryo storage costs (including cryopreservation storage and maintenance fees).
- Donor eggs or donor sperm.
- Surrogacy arrangements.
- Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT-A/PGT-M).
- Experimental or non-evidence-based procedures.

Important conditions to know
Access to IVF treatment shall be available to Principal Members and/or their declared spouses, subject to the following:
- The couple must demonstrate clinical infertility, defined as failure to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse (or as clinically determined)
- The benefit shall be limited to a maximum of two (2) IVF attempts per beneficiary over their lifetime
- The female partner shall be aged 41 years or below at the commencement of the treatment cycle
- Both primary and secondary infertility shall be eligible, provided, for secondary infertility, the couple has no living child at the time of treatment e) All cases must be supported by documented clinical diagnosis and specialist recommendation.
Approved IVF facilities
SHA will only approve IVF claims from selected accredited fertility centres.
The approved facilities are:
- Fertility Point (Afrihospital Holding Limited)- Mombasa
- Fertility Point (NMC-Fertility Kenya Limited)- Upper Hill, Nairobi
