FAQs

What is IVF?
IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a medical procedure where an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body in a laboratory. After fertilization, the embryo is transferred to the uterus.
How successful is IVF?
IVF success rates vary depending on many factors, such as age, medical conditions, and embryo quality. The average success rate for IVF at Fertility Point is around 50- 65%
Who Can Benefit from IVF?
IVF is recommended for those with issues like blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, ovulation disorders, endometriosis, and unexplained infertility.
How long does IVF cycle take?
A complete IVF cycle generally lasts between 4 and 6 weeks, beginning with ovarian stimulation and culminating in an embryo transfer.
What happens to unused embryos?
Unused, viable embryos can be safely frozen (cryopreserved) for future use in subsequent transfer attempts. There are charges applicable for freezing of gametes or embryos.
How many cycles are needed?
The number of cycles required varies by patient. Some achieve pregnancy on the first attempt, while others may require more than one.
What medical tests are required beforehand?
Prior to treatment, doctors require a sperm analysis, ovarian reserve testing (such as AMH and AFC blood tests and ultrasounds), and an assessment of the uterus (like an HSG).
Is the egg retrieval painful? ?
Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure performed under anesthesia or conscious sedation, so patients typically experience minimal to no pain during the procedure itself.
What are the potential side effects of medications?
Fertility medications can cause side effects like mood swings, bloating, and breast tenderness. A more serious, though uncommon, risk is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS).
Do I need bed rest after an embryo transfer?
Extended bed rest is not recommended. Patients are generally advised to rest briefly and then resume normal, non-strenuous daily activities.
Is IVF covered by insurance?
IVF coverage varies by insurance provider and plan. Some insurance providers offer partial or complete coverage for IVF, while others may not.
Is there an age limit for IVF?
There is no strict age limit for IVF, but age cut-offs determine this based on the success rates and risks associated with advanced maternal age.
Can IVF be used with donor eggs or sperm?
Yes, IVF can be used with donor eggs or sperm if needed. Donor eggs or sperm may be recommended for individuals or couples with infertility issues.
What is the cost of IVF?
The cost of IVF varies depending on the clinic and location. The average cost of a single IVF cycle is around $4500 -$8,000, determined by various factors, including medication and other treatments.
What is the process of embryo transfer?
Embryo transfer is a simple procedure that involves transferring the embryo into the uterus using a small catheter. It is typically painless and does not require anesthesia.
How long after IVF can I return to work?
Most individuals can return to work within a day or two after the egg retrieval procedure. However, avoiding strenuous activities for a few days after embryo transfer is recommended.
Can I freeze embryos for later use in IVF?
Yes, embryo freezing is an option for individuals or couples who wish to preserve their embryos for later use in IVF.
How long can embryos be frozen for IVF?
Embryos can be frozen for many years and used successfully in IVF.
What issues are addressed during psychology counselling?
Sessions may focus on stress, anxiety, emotional coping, relationship challenges, grief, trauma, decision-making, and building emotional resilience.
How soon can I take a pregnancy test?
Because the hormone hCG is often used to trigger egg maturation, doctors generally recommend waiting 14 days after the embryo transfer to perform a blood or urine test.
Can I travel or fly?
There is no medical evidence that flying or traveling affects pregnancy rates following an embryo transfer.
