How long does IVF take?

The length of time for an in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment can vary depending on various factors such as individual circumstances, the type of IVF protocol being used, and the response of the patient's ovaries to the stimulation medication.

A typical IVF treatment cycle can take four to six weeks, from the initial consultation and diagnostic tests until the embryo transfer procedure. The process usually involves the following steps:

  • Ovarian stimulation, which lasts for about 8 to 14 days, involves the administration of medication to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
  • Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure that usually takes about 20-30 minutes and is done under sedation or anesthesia.
  • Fertilization of the eggs with sperm in a laboratory.
  • Embryo culture in the lab for 3-5 days.
  • Embryo transfer typically takes only a few minutes and is performed 3-5 days after fertilization.

After the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is done two weeks later to determine if the procedure was successful. However, it is essential to note that each case is unique and may require a different length depending on individual circumstances.
